Organizational Structure and Firm Innovation in a Retail Chain
نویسندگان
چکیده
Two organizational structures for a retail chain are examined for their effect on the rate of firm innovation. A centralized organization is defined as one in which store practices are mandated from corporate headquarters (HQ) and this results in HQ being the sole source of new ideas. A decentralized organization gives freedom to store managers to adopt their own ideas and disseminates innovations made by store managers. The difference in average profit between the centralized and decentralized organizations is found to be a non-monotonic function of innovative opportunities. The centralized organization is preferred when innovative opportunities are moderate while the decentralized organization is preferred when such opportunities are rich. Centralization also tends to fare better in environments in which ideas are relatively complex.

Centralization vs. Decentralization in a Multi-Unit Organization: A Computational Model of a Retail Chain as a Multi-Agent Adaptive System
A model of a retail chain is developed in which store managers continually search for better practices. Search takes place over a rugged landscape defined over the space of store practices. The main objective of this research is to determine how the amount of discretion given to store managers as to how they run their stores influences the rate of innovation at the store level. We find that gre...
متن کاملOrganizational Structure and Perpetual Innovation: A Computational Model of a Retail Chain
Historically, Sears, Roebuck has been a relatively decentralized organization (Worthy, 1984) which, it has been argued, is a source of their success (Emmet and Jeuck, 1950). Analogous comments have been made to explain the superior performance of Wal-Mart (Collins and Porras, 1994). While anecdotes are many, there has been no formal analysis as to how organizational structure influences perform...
متن کاملInnovation Criterion for Evaluating the Organizational Effectiveness of a Retail Chain using a Complex Adaptive System Model and the SWARM Simulation Environment
In this paper we examine the application of a Complex Adaptive System (CAS) on studying the relative organizational effectiveness of Centralized and Decentralized Retail Chains. The criterion for the evaluation of this effectiveness is the rate of creation of new (innovative) ideas, related to management policies and practices, by the Shops of the Chain, which are the agents of the CAS Model. T...
